Due to the congestion created as a result of the full of general public who arrived from all around the country, some people were compelled to stay at the hospital premises for a long time without the least facilities until such time their turn come. Fortunately there was a gentleman admiring philanthropy who were turning his own heart sincerely towards this pathetic situation. He who was seeing a long time at this sight thought lengthily when he went his home. He might be thought rhat what a value it there is an opportunity to take treatments for patients justly and easily than this. This great man who was thinking for a while came to a decesion. he who stood up from the seat soon, called his affectionate wife and told the idea perceived in his mind. she who is not disregard even a word of her loving husband accepted this excellent idea with full of pleasure and came to a final decesion admixed with freindlyness of both of them. In such away, innauguration of the Co-operative Hospital, Kurunegala was marked with the donation of property belonegd to late Mr. U B Wanninayake who was a reputed person with expertise as well as a late Principal of Maliyadeva College, a late Minister of Finance in the Democtratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka 1965-1970 and his loving wife late Mrs. Chandra Wanninayake.
The hospital was established in 1951 under the name “Athugalpura Cooperative Health Society” with the participation of 48 members and 6 employees. At its inception, services were limited to outpatient treatment, and the society was registered under the same name. Following the reorganization and re-registration of cooperative societies under the Cooperative Act No. 05 of 1972, the institution was officially registered on 22.04.1975 as C/S Kurunegala Cooperative Health Society Ltd. under registration number KU/1572. All members and employees gratefully acknowledge that the hospital has been developed through the immense dedication and commitment of past and present chairmen, directors, and staff. In its early years, general meetings were held with great difficulty in a classroom at Kurunegala Maliyadeva Model School. With the steady growth of the hospital, both membership and public interest in the institution have increased significantly, which is a matter of pride and satisfaction.
